I’ve done a bit of research and it seems you need a Module for it and this module needs to be physically installed. Now from what I’ve seen you need to basically rip out the entire dash to install this Module.
Prepare a USB stick, formatted on Windows and “blessed” by Toyota’s program, primed with special number. Take stick to car and start up system. the system will then read the USB key and write some data back. take USB key to computer and get actual upgrade. go back and upgrade your system.

All just thought i would share i am getting a kit that allows you to retrofit an aftermarket carplay kit to a 3G MMI high/+ system without compromising the OEM system in my 2012 sportback A5.
