Easiest way to check is to start the engine and pop the air con on, have a look under the bonnet to see if the cooling fan is running or not. It should run at half speed with the AC on. Re: Air Con Failure linked to Compressor- POLL. One owner from new 07 plate with Full VWSH. The air-con was re-gassed in warranty, but the compressor failed six months outside of the warranty. Lots of bubbling noises and no cold air. VW paid for the parts and part of the labour after they were approached by the dealer.

It’s become very common for the Volkswagen Golf Mk5 air-con compressors to stop working. This is due to a lack of lubrication within the mechanical unit and basically a manufacturing defect. Although Volkswagen acknowledge this manufacturing defect, whether or not they’ll replace it under an extended warranty in goodwill is questionable

The pressure switch - down to the left as you look into the engine bay, between the radiator and the alternator and mounted vertically off the aircon pipe - is a screw off/on fitting with an electrical connector on top that fits onto a Schrader-type valve (like a car tyre valve) on the pipe, that allows the switch to be removed with minimal
They originally quoted me £780+ but after speaking with VW head office and taking my full VW service history in to account (my car is an '06 and out of warranty) they reduced the bill to £130. Unfortunately the parts are on back order so it could be a while before I get working air-con again but still £130 beats £780 any day of the week.
